Gum Disease Can Be Treated With Laser Dentistry

Posted .

If your gums bleed easily, or are tender or red, you may have gum disease. In the case of advanced gum disease, Dr. Shelly Montes may utilize laser dentistry at Montes Periodontics & Implant Dentistry. The use of lasers in gum treatments allows more comfort for the patient and more efficient, detailed work for our dentist.

Periodontal laser therapy is performed to remove damaged gum tissues from around the roots of the teeth. Once the infected gums have been removed by the laser, the roots will be uncovered. Root scaling, which involves scraping plaque off of the tooth roots, can then be performed by our periodontist. The roots are then planed, or smoothed, to help prevent the accumulation of future bacteria. The area is then allowed to heal.

The use of lasers in this procedure means that anesthetic likely will not be necessary. In addition, lasers are very precise. The damaged areas can be very accurately targeted. With laser therapy, bleeding, discomfort, and swelling are limited, so the recovery time is shorter.
